Biggest Flaw of the Nexus One

The Nexus One looks to be the thing of the future for Android. We’ve tried it, we love it, and think it’s actually the big turning point, or rather catalyst, for the platform. But more on that in a later post. Having read all the rave reviews of the device dropping in what we thought was most interesting was this quote from Garrett Murrays blog on one of the biggest issues with the Nexus One:

The Android Market is a terrible mess. Nearly every app I looked at had nothing but spam comments. Literally things like, “Follow me on twitter at @blah” and “Ladies, hit me up on AIM at blah” which is embarrassing and sad. Makes the entire thing feel like cheap garbage. When you add the fact that nearly all the apps are free, and most are a UI mess, it doesn’t come off too well.

Now we have a device one the market that in no way has to stand in the shadow of the iPhone, now Google needs to take control of it’s ecosystem to make it a fully perfect competitor in every aspect. We’re very optimistic and think that this will be one of Google’s focus points in 2010.

Maybe that’s how it’s going to be, for now. Steady but firm steps never failed anyone. Nexus One has many advantages over iPhone to start with and it’s just the beginning. Google will not be able to completely master the mobile industry, even being the giants they are, with their phone’s debut. It is a matter of time before it takes market dominance. Question is, can we handle all this hegemony?

I definitely think Google are on their way to becoming controllers of the mobile industry in the same way as the Apple are. That is, in the premium mobile segment. The big advantage Google has is that has killer services supporting it’s mobile business, including the giant leaps in mobile search it has just taken. Apple are lagging behind significantly on innovative integrated services and can never catch up with Google as long as they don’t create these services themselves.

My thesis is that both Apple and Google have their place in controlling the mobile industry because one is the king of web services and the other the king of user experience. The problem with the other players on the market (Sony Ericsson, Nokia et al.) is that they’re not he king of anything in the premium segment.
